Bridesmaids in Oscarland

24 01 2012

I wanted to quickly note that I’m incredibly excited Bridesmaids is actually in the running for two Academy Awards! When I saw this film (twice in theatre) not once did it cross my mind that it could be a serious  Oscar contender!

With Melissa McCarthy snagging a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo nominated for Best Original Screenplay, it shows the Academy is not afraid to highlight a strong, influential, and far reaching comedy when it sees one!

While I don’t think Bridesmaids will win either award, I personally loved the film and hope that we see a lot more from McCarthy in the future!
Is the Academy way off or right on the money giving Bridesmaids these nominations? Let me know what you think!

Nominations: 84th Academy Awards

24 01 2012

I love watching movies, and for this reason I love the Academy Awards!

There is something about this award show in particular that pulls me in year after year!

Maybe its for the love of the art, maybe the glitz and glamour, maybe I secretly wish I could be in the audience!

Whatever my reasons, I tune in to not only the show, but the nominations as well! It’s almost like Christmas morning, and I’m sure it even surpasses that for those who hear their names called!

The nominations for this year’s show were revealed today. While there were some surprises like Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for Best Picture, there were those that made perfect sense such as George Clooney’s Best Actor nomination for The Descendants.

If you haven’t seen the entire list, click the link below for  in depth coverage!

Are there names you think should appear on this list? Were there nominations you think were off the mark? Let me know what you think!

Why we love awards shows

19 01 2012

There were 16.8 million people the world over watching this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Ever wonder why it is we’re so interested?

Here’s a great article that tries to answer that question!

Life. Camera. Action. New 2012 Oscar poster

16 01 2012

Have you seen the poster for the 84th Academy Awards?

The design, created by the firm Blood & Chocolate, is meant to represent the love we each personally have for movies.

The tagline “Celebrate the movies in all of us” is meant  to conjure the inherently emotional connection we all have with the world of film.

What do you think of the poster? Does it serve its purpose? Do you think that the photos adequately span eight decades of Oscar history? Which iconic movie picture would you have included? Let me know!

Top 5 Golden Globe Moments of 2012

16 01 2012

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards went off without any major notable issues last night. There was a teleprompter glitch, a microphone mishap, and a few tasteless, but expected, jokes from Ricky Gervais. However, the show was totally run of the mill as far as these things go.

While last night’s event won’t go down in history as the most memorable of all Golden Globes, it wasn’t without its charm.

Here is my list of the Top 5 Golden Globes Moments of 2012:

5) The dazzling array of dresses making their way across the red carpet-  This year seemed to bring out some of the best that fashion has to offer! My pick of the night would have to be Reese Witherspoon who looked ravishing in her strapless red Zac Posen gown.

When the dresses make it to a “top moments” list, that really doesn’t say much for the show itself!

I’m hoping for much more from the Academy Awards!

4) Ricky Gervais, who seemed to reign his quips in this year,  had some great jabs for actors present and those not in attendance.

Taking the liberty to highlight Eddie Murphy’s refusal to host this year’s Oscars, Gervais said, “Who needs the Oscars? Not me and not Eddie Murphy. He walked out on ‘em. He said no and good for him. But when the man who said yes to Norbit says no to you, you know you’re in trouble.”

Ouch, that one stung!

3) Octavia Spencer mentioning Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Help.

“I think Dr. King said it best: all labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance, and I thank you for recognizing that with our film,” she said. Very fitting for the occasion!

2) The ever talented Morgan Freeman accepting the Cecil B. De Mille Award from Sir Sidney Poitier. Enough said…

1) I loved Michelle William’s acceptance speech for her Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy win. The star of My Week with Marilyn seemed extremely thrilled and very sincere when she thanked her six year old daughter Matilda, “I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, and so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example that I take with me in my work and in my life.”

She also made mention that 52 years previously Marilyn Monroe herself accepted the very same award. Thought that was a nice touch!

What were your favorite moments from this year’s show? Chime in, I’d love to hear from you!

New Trailer: The Woman in Black

19 08 2011

This film looks rather creepy, has an interesting plot line, and quirky cinematography. But, the million dollar question is, do you think Daniel Radcliffe has what it takes to make it in a post-Harry Potter world?

You’ll have to wait until 2012 to find out!

Friends with Benefits: Take it or leave it

19 08 2011

Why I thought that Friends With Benefits would be more than just a movie about friends engaging in casual sex was beyond me!

Really, let’s be honest, that is precisely what it is.

A man and a woman find themselves single, lonely, and looking for love in all the wrong places. They discuss their hang-ups with relationships, and how they miss the physical side of having a mate. Then it occurs to them, why not use each other as a scratching post with no obligations?

They lay down some ground rules, vow to not get romantically entangled and boom…they instantly have a friend with benefits!

During the course of this arrangement they couldn’t possibly develop feelings for each other, find themselves in complicated emotional situations, or realize that maybe sex without emotion isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Oh wait….all of that happens!

But mocking aside, the movie did have some redeeming qualities.

Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis are both hilarious! They truly have a knack for comedic timing and delivery, which is great to see after Social Network and Black Swan, both of which were more serious.

If you don’t believe me about NSYNC’s heartthrob, you obviously haven’t seen Timberlake on Saturday Night Live (Google “D@$K in a Box” or “Liquorville”)!

While I could go deeper into the plot of the whole film, it really isn’t necessary. Either you’re going to see this movie because you A) Like romantic comedies or B) Have a crush on Justin Timberlake/Mila Kunis. How they find themselves friends with benefits really isn’t all that important!

However, I will say this; Justin Timberlake makes smart and geeky seem cool!
